CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — A Cranston elementary student reportedly tried to light a Chromebook on fire Friday.
Police said they responded to Achievement First on Garfield Avenue for a report of a student attempting to light the computer on fire.
Officers said four students were participating in the “Chromebook challenge.”
The challenge involves inserting an object into the charging port.
Police said some smoke came from the devices.
Achievement First officials told NBC 10 that no students or staff members were injured, and that school operations resumed 30 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene.
In a statement, an Achievement First spokesperson said in part:
The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. To reinforce safe and responsible use of school technology, school leaders will meet with students on Monday to discuss expectations for the proper use of electronic devices. We appreciate the swift response from the local police and fire departments. We thank our Achievement First families and community for their continued support as we work to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for all.
